I've played with people whose RPG characters are like that. "Oh, you've rolled up another elven wizard..." I would also say that the longer a character is played the more that character is brought into line with a specific aspect of the player's personality. Very few gamers are convincing in their portrayal of someone that is nothing like them. A classic example is playing a character of the opposite gender.
