I figure this is the best place to post non-TROS stuff.

Has anyone here played this game?

this is the wiki for it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount&Blade

The developer's website:
http://www.taleworlds.com/

You basically build a warband and ride all over the game world looking for fights. It has very cool mounted combat and a level system for you and your followers. You recruit farmers or hire mercenaries and they have upgrade trees that you can guide how you want you men to advance. There are a few "heros" in the game that you can recruit to join you and they advance as your character does, with a stat and skill system. There is a bit of a story tot he game and you can eventually get castle or 2 and run some villages, but it is in beta and not all features are in the game.

I made a video of some gameplay from 3 of the "quick skirmish" options to show some friends. I put some music to it, but I tried to keep the volume low enough to hear the game. If you are interested, take a look!

A great game indeed. First to really hook me again over the years. :)

Two things however:
a) The full game is downloadable fror free, but unless you pay, your game ends at level 6 (meaning no vassalage for non-payers).
b) There's no continuous storyline, but that can be expected since the game is yet in development... and while your dialogue options are limited, you can pick fights and make people (and their fractions) really hateful towards you.

Want to raid a village? You got it. Want to personally enter it and and massacre every living being? Possible. Want to pillage caravans? Keep in mind they always have armed escort. Want to pick a fight with a king? Don't expect mercy from him afterwards. Don't have enough men to storm the caste walls? Starve 'em. That was tough though... My own food ran out and men started deserting while our camp was constantly being attacked by the castleholder's allies.

What I like about the game is that... while drawing the weapons might happen as quickly as in any other real time game... ALL combatants in the battlefield USE their weapons realistically. I mean that if you can you ride towards a crossbowman from an unexpected angle, it's perfectly normal that you can slay him with your sword while he's bowing down to pull the string of his crossbow. Footman's life is tough and deadly (and awsome to play if you can pull it off). There's no static defence... you have to click to raise your shield, and you're going to be dead very soon unless you time your attacks well and hit from the right direction.

Taleworlds also has an excellent forum with many gaming tips. Always listen to what Whoopin says. He's a monster.

Edit: Watched the video. Your skill with bow and javelin is just amazing. I'm completely useless with them, especially javelins. I've heard people say they take down charging horses with javelins. I've tried it and it's never happened. Sidestep and slash has worked the best. I also saw you thrusting with a lance. Never touch the attack button when using lance. Just lowers the damage dramatically. :)

And have you ever tried playing a footman? Telegraphing attacks works great on a horse, but it's a different matter on the ground altogether. :)

That looks really cool! I also like the music you choose for your video. :) I'd buy the game--if only I owned a PC instead of a Mac. And before you say anything, no, it's not an Intel Mac. Not yet, anyway. :)

No mac support is definetly the biggest issue for this game... But it was asked on the official boards and there will probably not be any either... :(

I think the default skill levels for the fast action scenerios pumps up the skill a bit. I was really lucky in that scene with the bow, when I took the horse out (I was aiming for the rider)with the bow, then followed up on the rider, I was sure it was going to end gloriously or it would be messy for me :) I got lucky and shot him in the face. Again, with the javelin, I was just happy I was capturing those battles because I doubt I could make that throw again if I wanted too!

With the lance, I had just gotten the concept of the crouched damage down and was occasionally slipping back into the thrusting, mainly against footmen.

I enjoy the mounted combat so much, that I only play a footman when I get dismounted. However, a specific fight is what hooked me to the game.
In that particular fight,I got dismounted and my men were all dead, there were about 10 mounted enemies left. I managed to kill a horse archer and take his horse, but it was cut out from under me very quickly and I was on foot again. A bit late in the final moments of the fight, I figured out that I could use a tree to keep my back a bit safer and I could sidestep around the tree to avoid the attacks and hit them when they were apart and slowing around the tree. Well, there was an enemy stragling a bit away from the tree. I ran out to kill him and hopefully get his horse, and I was taken out from behind by another guy. Aside from the indestrucable lances and the quickdraw weapons, the fight feel so real, it is amazing.

And yes, I am working on my telegraphing, it noticably hurts me when they see my charge coming :)

Anyway, it is a fun game, and I figured it was as close to TROS that I have found in a computer game, so I thought I post about it here. I made the video to show some friends an example of the gameplay, because the website for the game doesn't convey how the game feels.

How did you make the video, by the way? :)

I captured the gameplay with Fraps and I created the video with Adobe Premier Elements. I have a friend that uses Fraps with Windows Movie Maker(included with XP for free) and his movies are better, but he is more type A than me :)

Cool, thanks! Maybe I'll fix up a footman video if I find the time to play a bit. :)

Your version of Fraps was unregistered one, right? Limited to 30 secs?

No, I registered the copy of Fraps that I use, I got it to capture WoW runs with some friends. The unregistered version version should work, but I think you can't turn the fps counter off and having to start it every 30 seconds may get old.

I just looked at the price and it was no where near that high when I paid for it, I think I paid $15-$20 (it's was a while back). I'm not sure of any other programs for capturing, unfortunately. A friend was making videos of WoW and I got fraps to show the runs from a different angle.

Been playing it since version .4xxx and a lot has changed, but the fun is still there. Infantry combat is even MORE possible now then it used to be. There used to be a dramatic concussion for being hit, even for 0 damage, which meant you could do nothing once the train of horse bumps hit you!
