I need some help with CTNs. The book says "The highest Level of Effect (1-3) from each incorporated Vagary is added".

Which to me means that a spell using Conquer 3, Summoning 2 with the effects Control 3 (3), Implant 2 (0), and Magic 2 (2). would have a level adjustment to CTN of 5 (3 for the highest conquer effect, 0 for all other conquer effects, two for the highest summoning effect).

Yet the table seems to say that you only would add one for magic because you always add only one for extra vagaries.

How do you guys figure out CTNs?

Second question, is there anything stopping a Summoning Spell of One from having a continuous effect by adding the magic effect to whatever the spell was already doing? What about a continuous mana spell? I can't tell if that is breaking with the intent of the system, or if coming up with creative ways to shatter reality is the intent of the system.

Thank you for your input.

Welcome to the boards Valadrim!

It's been a while since I looked at Core magic. I will have to glance at the book again before I answer; I'm guessing someone else will get in before I do. Nevertheless I look forward to discussing these thorny issues over the weekend.

Regards,

Trust the table. Tables are nearly always more clear than the text (unless they have typos). If you find the TNs too low, you can always turn to the text variant as a valid alternative.

You mean... adding a weekly duration for summoning spell and then have the demons popping out from somewhere for seven days straight?

To what effect? So that you could Draw mana without actually casting the spell again? For a whole hour/day/week? I'd totally allow it. Mana I: You get Draw worth of SP, age a month, then you use it or it dissipates, and you get Draw worth of SP again while aging another month... and another, and another... What!? You want to cancel the weekly effect? I hope your Draw worth SP is good enough for a successful counterspell.

hi

spell of 3 (2 to 3 vangarys) (P111)

T+R+V+D+L (+1 PER ADDITIONAL VAGARY USED)

WHAT DUS THAT MAN??

OK

p112 see table

t= targets

what is you wish to summon?

(0) incorporeal (sprite or ghost)
(1) inanimate object( a lump of rock an item)
(2) plant life (a tree or bush or just the pure cotton from a cotton plant)
(3) animals(or human) {read daemon also)

R=
distance from self the effect is to be done.

normal is line of sight.(2)

you normally summon some thing you do not wish to be in side you, nor touching.(if its a animal/human)

volume (or size)

how big is it?
a human will be (2)

duration the length of effect.
say you need it fro one hour (1)

so to summon a daemon your looking at the following.

T+R+V+D+L (+1 PER ADDITIONAL VAGARY USED)
(3)+(2)+(2)+(1)+3(from your discription)+1 for 2 vagary being used.
=ctn of 12.

p(113)
dialogue is used -1
gestures are used-1
making for a CTN of 10 when used.

if formalized you would be casting on a 11 or 9(is voice and hand movements are used.) this is duse to the number of extra vangarly being use is droped.

so your only useing 2 but it like casting with just 1.

you may need to do some sign drawing to see if you can make it lower. and it woks that way. (never used it my self)

so if you give me the spell you what to cast a description place and i will tell you the Ctn in a brake down form. happy to do this. i always loved the magic system in the game.

best thing to do is thing what is it yo uwhat to do.

discribe it.

then look at the variables table on p112 and see what matches.

then ass the mas level and how many of vagarys to be used.

that normally works.

reagrds and happy gaming
dragon.

sorry about the double post second question.

Hi again

the mana spells and the self destruct spells are out side the normal.

they are spells in their own right and written as is.

you cant alter them much as they are not spell driven from the vagers as such.

they are the exceptions from the rule.

also they age you.

why would you wish to have a spell continued working that continuously ages you??

cant work. our spending life force constantly to help boost your magic reserves, only you are never useing them.

sorry but to me they are do nto mess with spell. but other may see it differently. it's your game so you gm as you wish.

that what i love about TROS it so darn flexable.

reagrds
