I am new to the rules, so please excuse the rookie questions.

The combat example in the core book has the defending character use a shield for one defence, and a parry for the other. Could the character have used the shield for both defences? Given the great TN for a shield, I figure unless I am trying some manoeuvre I am going to go with shield for defence when I can.

I am assuming that the same item can be used multiple times. I figure the example was just that, an example, whose intent was to show different "actions" taken during combat. But I figure I should make sure.

Hi Shawn, and welcome to the boards!

You're absolutely correct, but:

a) you can also use shield for attacking (use the DTN for ATN and ST+1 DR)
b) your shield might be momentarily disabled by the Beat maneuver, so, in that situation you must parry or evade
c) some referees might rule that the shield's DTN might increase (up to DTN 7) in some situations, say, when a bunch of throwing axes are stuck in it

Also, know what kind of shield you are using :)
A point about shields
Another point about shields
