Gelure's Military

Starting with what the book says...

Wait, "The Gelure Military is not especially large or well equipped" -- and then, less than 1/2 a page later -- "...the bulk of this wealth goes to the military, which makes up for its lack of size with the very best equipment and training."

Those seem, to me, mutually exclusive. But I'm going to settle with what makes sense in perspective to everything else, it's a well-equipped, well-trained force of small number, with Generals who've been on the front lines most of their lives. We'll forgive the writers though, because they have a pretty small staff and things like this slip through. And with that out of the way...

Well, there's really not much else. So here's my take, comments appreciated.

On Size

As the size of the Gelurian Military is dis-proportionally large ("Most every family has a son in the military"), it falls to common sense that it performs many tasks that would otherwise be delegated to civilians. Scientists, inventors, writers, architects, carpenters, smiths, and many other professionals, while with notable civilians in their number, exist in large numbers among the uniformed. Generally, their being in the military means that they write about, draw blueprints for, or craft military-based things. However, it should be noted that even though about a third of the populace will claim to be in the "military," only a very small part of them (~3% of total pop) are actually trained and paid fighting forces.

On Training

The Generals who run their regional forces are smart enough not to give a smart recruit a halberd and expect him to do nothing but fight, so they look for intellectuals among the ranks and give them specialized positions. Some theorize about how new weapons can be integrated into old tactics, others invent the new weapons (most of which don't get very far down the line to be mass-produced). Still others work on advisory staffs and retinues of the nobility. That said, nobody in the military or militia is exempted from training sessions, as being in fighting fitness is more important to the Generals in times of crisis.

On Leadership

As Gelurian society favors loyalty above all other virtues, this transfers well into the military class. Most of the citizenry would follow their General (or, in the case of the capitol, their Emperor) into just about anywhere, and wouldn't question motives. This leads to a military that almost never routs, lasting until the General says its time to retreat (and even then they do so reluctantly).

On the subject of Generals, each one is assigned to a region within Gelure. Most, if not all, of the Generals remember Gelure before Uglubs rise to power. As such, they are veterans of past wars, well-read students of military history and lore (notably the Old Empire), and quite skilled with the blade themselves. It is conjectured by those who believe that the newer Generals were chosen for their talents in more supernatural areas, though the citizenry remains ignorant (whether by choice or preference on the part of the General) of such accusations.

On Recruitment

All soldiers recruited within a General's region are assigned to the army under that him, though they are not expected to run their region. Each General also manages a strong militia, giving a significant tax cut to all registered members. The tax cut barely covers the cost of weapons and armors, which are to be payed for by the militiaman (though they remain the government's). Administrative duties are delegated to magistrates or governors -- often officers in the General's inner circle -- who are chosen for life. This will be discussed more in a politics thread.

The Generals are also tasked with maintaining a strong professional army. Most Generals opt for a "best of" model, where the top members of their militia are given the "privilege" of serving in the Dark Betrayers' army. Many who prove themselves worthy are elevated to officers' positions and given simple titles. Of course, proving yourself worthy in the Gelurian military is as much about knowing how to fight as it is how to talk (though the fighting plays a more significant role). This, again, is often delegated, but this time to long standing knights, who chose and pay wages to their section of the force. Often, knights are payed for their trouble by their General, who are in turn given an extra bit of cash from Uglub himself.

UPDATED! April 07, 2008

Since discussion seems to have ground to a halt, I've decided to update this page with the ideas that seemed the most logical. Most of them will end up in other pages in the future. Next one planned is "Religion in Gelure".
